Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed as a form of resistance against oppression by Africans taken to Brazil as slaves overs 500 years ago. It incorporates attacks/self-defense, acrobatics, dance, music, language, history and more. It is oftern referred to as the Game of Life.

Today, it is practiced all over the world by many groups and continues to evolve while staying rooted to its most basic elements developed hundreds of years ago.

Capoeira El Paso was established in 2007 and remains the only Capoeira school in the region. It is part of the umbrella group, United Capoeira Association, founded by world renowned master, Mestre Acordeon.

Since its founding, Capoeira El Paso has helped establish Samba Alma de Fogo, El Paso’s only Brazilian percussion band, and opened Sol Studio, a space for dancers, martial artists, movers and shakers, and agents of change. Capoeira El Paso currently has classes for toddlers, children and teens/adults.

They have done countless performances and demonstrations throughout the region, reaching hundreds of children and adults. In 2021, they established an after school program to introduce Capoeira to underserved children without regular access to arts education.

The organization encourages residents of all races, genders, religions, sexual identities, and socio-economic backgrounds to participate in its programs. Through music, dance, and martial arts education, Capoeira El Paso, Inc. aims to develop a culturally competent community that is physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy and resilient.

Your donation will help us grow our programs so we are able to provide more arts education to the community!
