Emilio was born in Zacatecas, Mexico. He arrived in the United States seeking a better life for his family.
About 30 years ago, Estrella del Paso, then Diocesan Migrant & Refugee Services, helped Emilio become a lawful permanent resident. Then, 15 years after that, Emilio became a U.S. citizen.
“My family is together. My children, my grandchildren were born here. I have my wife. We live a good life here in El Paso.”
Emilio’s daughter, Erika, now works at Estrella del Paso as a Department of Justice Accredited Representative. She helps people apply to become lawful permanent residents and naturalized citizens.
For this interview, Erika asked her father Emilio how it makes him feel to know that she is now helping people in our community who are seeking the same help he received.
“I feel a great deal of satisfaction especially for you, for my son Ruben, and my daughter Maria Olivia because it was a difficult process for all of us. They are the reason I became a citizen,” said Emilio.
For his daughter Erika, and for many of us at Estrella del Paso, we do this work for our families, for our community, and for our people.
