I’m Mary Cortez, Diversions Specialist at the El Paso Coalition for the Homeless—and I’m thrilled to support our mission this Giving Day.

Every day, I witness how one small act of support can change the trajectory of someone’s life. That’s the heart of Diversion—a program designed to intervene before homelessness begins.

Imagine a father who just got hired but can’t afford steel-toe boots. A young woman who needs a bus ticket to escape domestic violence. A family facing eviction over a single missed rent payment. These aren’t hypotheticals, they’re real stories from our community. And Diversion is how we respond.

💡 Unlike traditional grants, Diversion is nimble. It allows us to meet people where they are, with help for rent, deposits, utilities, transportation, and other urgent needs that can mean the difference between crisis and stability. I’ve seen it work. Families stay housed. People rediscover hope. And sometimes, they return just to say, “You helped me when no one else could.”

This Giving Day, I’m inviting you to be part of that impact. During the Milk & Cookies Power Hour (October 16, 2025, from 9–10 PM), we’re rallying for the most $10 donations. If we win, our agency receives an extra $1,000 to help even more people. 🌍 And if we get a donation from the furthest country from El Paso? That’s another $500! So let’s make it count.
